Imagine living in this 4,000 square foot open home with your family – how would you spend your first week here? Before you answer that question, there are a few things you need to know about the contemporary home known as the Green Lantern Residence. It occupies a corner lot in Alamo Heights, an affluent neighborhood of San Antonio, Texas.

Showcasing an open nature and embracing the natural surroundings in both shape and concept, the home was designed by San Antonio-based studio John Grable Architects.  Overlooking the Olmos Basin and gathering views of downtown San Antonio, the home kept some of its original floor-plan: “The single story bedroom portions of the original 1948 ranch style home remained and were encapsulated with new one and two story public space additions.”

Architects carefully chose their design weapons, offering the family their visually attractive private heaven: “At the ground floor changes in level, stepping up over the pool along the main entry bridge and back down again from the kitchen to the living area, provide a playful dialogue and transition between public spaces, even as a largely open floor plan and generous windows act to connect these spaces to each other and the outdoors. Additionally, wall-to-wall sliding doors in the living area open up to expand the room out into the pool and landscape that provides additional outdoor space for entertaining and gathering of friends and loved ones.

The entry bridge spanning the pool enlivens these outdoor spaces with a grotto waterfall niche that compliments the cool shade of the heritage trees that reside throughout the yard. This rhythm is mirrored at the second floor as a series of folding doors in the ‘party room’ open to a large out-door terrace in the tree canopies, which again steps down to its own ‘landscape’ green roof garden with hot tub that takes in distance vistas of downtown.”

Incorporating sustainable systems like photovoltaic panels, a green roof system, grey-water harvesting and LED lighting, the home was built with respect for natural design: “The new construction was designed to re-use the existing foundation, and wood from the previous structure was recycled and re-used. Passive systems such as arbors and overhang structures were implemented to produce shading and reduce solar gain, while the entire project was sited to protect the number of existing heritage oak trees found throughout the site during construction.”

Perfect for entertaining, living a relaxed family life and enjoying a healthy, sustainable approach to urban living, this green-certified home folds the most important home sustainability issues into an elegant, eco-friendly family home.

Charming Modern Home Extension Re-Shaping Socializing Opportunities

Extending a home to fit current needs is not to be taken easily. A modern home extension requires planning for future use and using what already exists to support that. An exemplary proof is Casa ATT by Dionne Arquitectos, a home in Puebla, Mexico, that was re-designed by the architects as a fuller, more nurturing collection of spaces. In their successful effort of renewing the outline of the house, architects integrated the new structure into the familiar floor plan by “generating clear transitional environments discovering visual axes and circulation leading to the new spaces.”

Plenty of socializing areas bring the family together: the new open social space, terrace and guest bedroom complete the necessary space and helps better organize the interiors. In addition, the terrace overlooking the garden connects the original volume with the new additions. In these photos captured by Patrick López Jaimes, the layout looks beautifully put together. From the front, the house looks private and once you step inside, details flood your design-hungry mind. According to the architects, “ATT House is a house in which a clear spatial harmony lives through environments that invite habitation.”

What do you think about this modern home extension? Can this home inspire you to extend your own piece of heaven? mo
